FASHION

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
They used blemish tools, moved her eyes lower & made them wider, expanded her lips & blurred out edges of her forehead for her hair.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
I think that this act is considered unethical because you're changing yourself & making yourself into someone that really isn't  you. This is even worse for people that represent & advertise beauty because it's not real in reality.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
In company's and products such as Dove. They change beauty when it isn't a natural process.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Changes like adjusting brightness. Things like changing where her eyes are or altering their neck only changes what they really look like.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
The difference is that you're born one way and it's not right to change the way someone looks because then it's not really them anymore. In photojournalism when you edit photos its to make it more appealing to the eye & make a vivid image in your mind not to destroy the beauty for something else.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
You can't alter everything in the picture, keep it original & realistic, don't create something thats not real to your own eye or others.

Lytro Warm-Up

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo?
It focuses on whichever part of the picture you click on. You can also zoom & move the picture around.

2. How does this new camera work?
The ability to select where you want to focus.

3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about)
They'd have to know to take pictures with depth & detail or where some kind of action may be happening.

4. Is it worth the money?
Yes I think its worth the money because of what you're able to do like choose where you want it to be focused & could be used for more beginners so that they take the kind of pictures they want to.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II

1. Think about your motivation & emotions: Blankly staring at the camera rarely gets good results. Be silly, don't be afraid to over-react. The worst that can happen is that you fill up your memory card with useless photos; but you might also find yourself with a proper gold-nugget of a self portrait.

2. Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That's part of the point, after all.

3. Use a tripod. Seriously. While it's possible to get good photos while you're hanging on to your camera arms-length, it's a lot easier if you've got the freedom to move around a bit.

Environmental Portrait

I chose this picture because I like how the guitar leads to the guys face. I also like he's kind of laying on the guitar.

I like this picture because the environment that they chose kind of matches how the girl is dressed. I like how she's wearing a cowboy hat and has her thumbs in her pocket.

Photography Self Portrait

I chose this picture because I thought it was so creative that instead of the picture having her face she's holding a picture of someone else's over hers in the perfect position.

I chose this picture because he's not just staring at the camera he's most likely just being himself and making a silly face. I also like how he's wearing the furry hat.

Casual Portrait

I like this picture because she looks really happy and I chose this picture because it looks likes she was caught laughing in the moment.

I chose this picture because they look like they're happy and they were caught in the moment of taking another picture.

I  will take pictures of Tania Ramirez. I will shoot at the Trail of lights. I'll make this shoot successful by taking casual pictures of her walking, laughing, ect. My plan is to take framing photos and a lot of simplicity photos.

Sim Cam

F2.8- Looks the best at 1/125th of a second shutter speed. At F2.8 there is no background visible- it is very blurry and all you can really see is the couple.
F4- Looks the best at 1/250 of a second shutter speed. At F4 the background is blurry but you can kind of see it in the background.
F5.6- Looks the best at 1/60 of a second shutter speed. At F5.6 the background looks like a blurry 2-D, and the couple pops out 3-D.
F8- Looks the best at 1/30 of a second shutter speed. At F8 the background looks is visible but its still focused on the couple.
F11- Looks the best at 1/30 of a second shutter speed. F11 the background is visible and the couple is also visible.
F16- Looks the best at 1/15 of a second shutter speed. At F16 the background is visible and the couple is also visible.
F22- Looks the best at 1/8 of a second shutter speed. At F22 the background is visible and the couple is also visible.

American Soldier slide show and captions (review)

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?
I think the most powerful image from the slideshows is the very first one where he's returning the call to the Sgt. because it shows Ian with this serious facial expression and it shows his sticky note with the number and that it says "Army recruiter". Another thing that makes this picture so powerful is that he's basically on the line with his future.

B. Through the photos, Ian is in different locations, each set of photos from the same location comprise a short series or set.
Set #1 1-9
Set #2 10-30 33, 34, 37, 39-44
Set #3 50-70
Set #4 31, 32, 35, 36, 38, 45-49, 70-83

Which set of images was the most powerful? Why?
I think the most powerful set is are the ones in Iraq because it shows the stuff he goes through, what he sees, and they're all taken from where he is.

c. How do the images work together to tell a story?
The pictures are in the order of which the events happened. They start from where he's first making the call for camp to when he's actually in iraq after all his trainings and going back and forth from them and home.

3.Underneath each photo is the caption that ran in the Denver Post
A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
Present.

B. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
They're really descriptive it kind of makes you feel like you're there and know Ian.

4. Now it's your turn to write a few captions- DO NOT COPY THEIR WRITING
A. Write three of your own captions to photos without looking at the caption written by the photographer. Be sure to they are written in the following form. For this assignment you can make up names and facts to write your captions.
Image 1: Ian makes the decision to call back the Sgt. and get ready to start his training camp as soon as he graduates.
Image 31: Ian arrived at the airport after training camp and met up with his family who were really excited to see him.
Image 82: Ian and his girlfriend Amy wanted to get married without a big wedding so they went to the court. After they were done Ian said "I'm so happy right now."

Shutter Speed

High shutter speed

Slow shutter speed

I didn't take pictures at blue & gold night.

The three settings are Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual. Aperture Priority is the lens being set at aperture while the camera is automatically setting the shutter speed. Shutter Priority is when you set the speed to the shutter and the camera sets the aperture.

Aperture

The left picture is an example taken at an aperture setting of F2.8

This is an example of a photo taken at an aperture setting of F16.

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
Our eyes are the one that most closely relate too.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture __the bigger the opening_, the higher the Aperture __the smaller the opening_.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
The low f stop settings the opening of the aperture will open bigger letting more light go it and the bigger the f stop the smaller the aperture letting less light go in.

Funny Captions - the right way!!

Stanley the pug in his bat man costume for halloween today. He was so excited that after I took the picture he took off running around the yard until his hat fell off.

Olivia, Tania, and Alyssa screaming and trying to hold on.  It got a little bumpy for them when they told us to go faster.

Adam being silly pretending like he's a headless man. His brother had fallen asleep and didn't know we took the picture.

Great Black and White Photographers PART 3

1.) The first thing that caught my eye was all of the arms hanging. I like how towards the middle of the arms theres a darker one and it's not fake it's a real person standing in the dark behind the fake ones that are hanging. The head on the shelf is another thing also caught my eye because it's another body part.

2.) I see body parts everywhere. Arms hanging on shelves. Also a real person behind all of the arms sticking their arm out pretending to also be apart of the fake ones.
I smell plastic from the arms. Perfume from the girl behind. Wood from the shelves.
I hear people talking. Clashing of plastic products. Door closing and opening.
I taste the smell of plastic products takes over all other sense and moves from my lungs while inhaling to the back of my throat.
I feel skin of the girl in the dark. The hard empty plastic and the soft texture of the mask.

1) The first thing that caught my eye in this picture was the stigma of the flower. It looks like little worms coming  out of something an egg or something. I like how you can tell which side the lights coming from because the left side is darker.

Academic Shoot reflection

1. Finding good classes to take them in was the hardest. Also finding something exciting.
2. I found myself focusing the camera the most.
3. Go on a day that exciting things are going on in classes like maybe when a science class is doing a lab. Look for better things to take pictures of.
4. Take the pictures.
5. Framing.
6. Simplicity and balancing.
7. Simplicity ask Mr.Reeves or go to another website to look.

1. The window from the gym door is framing him shoot the basketball.
2. Gym/Basketball
3. Yes the boy is holding a basketball in the gym.

Lines

1. The theater seats are in rows making lines following the rule of lines.
2. Not sure..
3. They probably wouldn't know because he's sitting in a theater.
4. Gotten the cover a book

Balancing

1. The girls in the back are balancing out with Becca (the instructor) doing the same thing.
2. Dance class.
3. Yes because they're doing tendus.

Avoiding Merges

1. His heads being cut off the desk are together.
2. History
3. No because theres nothing on his desk.
4. Took a better picture.

Rule of Thirds

1. The letters on the hall way wall are leading up to the doors.
2. Gym.
3. Probably not because that could be anywhere around school.
4. I could of got a person in the picture.

Simplicity

1. I only took the picture of the girls reading not of what was behind them too.
2. English.
3. Yes because they're reading books in groups.
4. I could of only took the picture of one of them instead of all three.

Africa & Mural Project preview (2)

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?
I would like to do a theme of "Friends" or maybe "Sports".

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
I think we should use both for people that have phone and for the people that don't have cameras good enough or a camera phone at all.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
In the halls, on the main stairs, the fish bowls, lockers, places where people will look at them.

Africa & Mural Project preview (1)

My reaction to the slide show was that it was very beautiful and soothing. I was also amazed by some of the pictures I saw because they looked unreal.

3. This is my favorite picture because I love lions and I think they're so beautiful! I also love that it's both a male and female together. They look like like they're in love and he's trying to protect her.

4. It's using simplicity because the main focus are the two lions touching heads.

 a.  What kind of camera did he use? Pentax 6711

b.     What is his reason for taking the photos? He found these animals mysterious, amazing, and beautiful. He wanted to capture them in natural being.

c.     What is his hope by taking these types of photos? By taking these types of photos he hoped to catch the animals in their natural state, state of being, find their emotion.

d.     "The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes."

Academic Shoot preview

My favorite picture was "Melancholy" because of the way that it was taken. In the picture is a boy pouring two different liquids into another container making a different liquid that's turned a different color in a science classroom. The picture is focused on him and what he's doing and everything else behind him isn't focused.

1. Why did you pick this photo?
I picked this photo because I liked the side it was taken from and how him and what he's doing is the main focus.
2. What rules of photography are evident in the photo?

Balance and framing.

1. Where do you think you could take photos like the ones you look at today? In science & math classrooms  maybe english. Also in the gym and speech classrooms.
2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in?Mr.Nash, Mrs.Jenschke, The gym, Ms.Kesling, and Ms.Fayad.
3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today?Pick good sides and views to take them from. Also of people that are actually working and going to classrooms that there is stuff going on in.

Filling the Frame

In this picture it looks like the girls were in a science class doing an experiment. It seems like the reaction to whatever it was caused an explosion which is what the picture caught. They look like they're having fun and the experiment is interesting.

Action & Emotion

In this picture I think the girl was going to get papers to help pass out for the teacher and someone was taking a picture of them while the boy jumped in and made a funny pose that made the teacher also make one. They look really happy and silly. They also look like they really like their teacher.

The story

I think in the girls serving food in this picture are having a benefit to raise money for something important. Maybe after a natural disaster or to raise money for a friend that needs help or a family. They could also be volunteering somewhere.

Post shoot reflection

1. Picking the right and appropriate things to take pictures of.

2. Focusing the camera and picking the right spot to take the picture. For example when I took the picture of the pencil dispensers I had to choose the right position and side to take it from.

3. Pick better views from some of the pictures and choose better things to take pictures of. Also use the six techniques we learned about.

4. Use the same camera and have Tania as my partner.

6. Yes so that I could use the techniques and take better photos from the first time.

Photo Manipulation & Ethics

1. A) The main point of this story is this story is the digital manipulation and its outcome. Photographers have taken images and manipulated them, some outcomes have been every single picture submitted by that individual taken down and even that photographer losing their job.

B) This type of photo editing is mostly unethical because you're creating a completely different image for people to look at. Sometimes making more dramatic or ect.

2. A) I think this is the most unethical picture because they're making it seem like theres a debate going on when the two have really never even met or been in the same room.

B) I think this was most ethical because all the changes they made weren't dramatic or crazy the just took out the pole that was behind the lady screaming.

Rule of Thirds

This is an example of the rule of thirds because the person is walking in the middle is the focus while the two buildings are leading to him or her and getting the whole person and street rather than just some of it.

Simplicity

This is a good example of simplicity because the background behind her is still and she's the center of the picture.

Balance

This is an example of balance because the woman with the curly short hair are balancing out with the buildings and the big puffy smoke at the top.

Avoiding Merges

This is a good example of avoiding merges because the yellow vehicle is in the way of the white one and they're merging with each other. The yellow vehicles also merging with the poles and mail boxes.

Lines

This is an example of lines because of the smoke lining up with the people that are jumping from the building.
